Today I explored ArcGIS Online. It is a useful tool for digital mapping. To learn more about it, I downloaded Iowa Township Data along with the project codebook. I notice that there is an extensive selection of spatial data linked to households.
I enjoyed learning about ArcGIS. If visualized on a map, a dataset might help answer questions regarding where certain groups were predominantly located, whether there was a larger population of some occupations than others, and whether people of different occupations tended to live farther apart or closer together. I would like to map college teachers along with college students. Different Basemaps can significantly impact the viewer’s experience. It can emphasize certain features or provide extra information in some contexts. For example, if streets are more important, street basemaps would be useful. However, if a creator is trying to emphasize the geographic position of landscapes, a topographic map might be better.
Customizing features were nice and gave me the opportunity to make the map my own. That said, I really appreciated the duplication of the original map because if I made a big change, I could still reference the original one. I like how you can determine the size of dots on the map, also I think its very helpfull that the filter function probides a histogram.
Highlighting layers is a cool feature as well, but it depends on what your aim is with the map, highlighted part somewhat flures roads and some names which if significnant can be lost because of this feature.
The aggregation feature was very helpfull for clustered summaries. I noticed that its not only a mapping software but also one that can very much be used for displaying statistics, ii thought that was pretty cool because previously I envisioned mmaps only as maps.
I would feel comfortable helping someone with ArcGIS. I do think I have to learn much more about it, but I feel confident in my basic skills, and I think I would be able to help others navigate it.
I thought clustered summaries were pretty cool and interesting. I thought it would have been better if ArcGIS had built in accessibility checker and no need for extensions, but I’m still happy there are resources ou there. For example colorblind friendly color palette, I think it’s nice that we can change object shapes so eaning can be conveyed through shapes as well. I think it was a bit frustrating that I had to constantly save changes. I was anxious that my changes would have been deleted. I think it would be helpfull to try ArcGIS with different types of data. I would like to deeply explore different basemap types and the Web App Function
